I enter the new year the same way I left the old one: that is to say, so short energy that I could jump off a dime. The two ETFs below are indicative of the subtle shift taking place in the sector which was the only meaningful winner for bulls in 2022.

Interesting first hour of the trading day, yes? Buying everywhere, green everywhere, optimism everywhere. And then things start weakening. I urge you to keep a close eye on the biggest of the big, and the strongest of the strong, which is AAPL. If this goes, everything goes.

Tuesday is going to be data-free and full of “hey it’s a new year!” silliness. Wednesday is when the year really begins.
