Growing up very near the middle of nowhere along the coast of Australia, from time to time, my family would encounter long distance travelers "passing through." They each had their way of expressing how travel had broadened their mind. There's an expression common in our family, which is said along the lines of "You can't get anywhere unless you've been nowhere" -- which, for the 70's and 80's, was a rather trascendental expression of the path to enlightenment for a bunch of sunburnt Aussies with little more on their minds than good surfing before a nice meal in the evenings.

Over the last half decade, I've learned to connect my trading life, which sometimes threatens to take over my life, with my traveling life. It's easy to make analogies between trading and golf, or trading and sailing. The three pursuits share exquisite parallels. Still, I find the experiences of travel to be especially similar to trading, and useful when conveying the more cerebral aspects of studying the markets.
