The answer to why this happened is fairly simple: Prior to 1980, the US economy was a productive one creating wealth via actual production and manufacturing. After 1980, the US economy, in tandem with declining interest rates and rising credit, became a FIRE economy (Finance, Insurance, Real Estate) that created wealth not through value-added production of goods and services, but instead, rising asset prices. 6/6/16
