Geographic descriptors in the U.S. are subjective things. “Midwest” for example is anchored to a time in history when the most westward part of the U.S. was the Mississippi River, so Illinois (which to my eyes is wayyyyy out east and a four-hour plane ride) is considered “Midwest“. So too is the “South” unclear. To me, the idea that Arizona or Pennsylvania would be considered part of the South is absurd.
