Precious Memories

When I was stuck on the plane-with-virtually-no-Wi-Fi yesterday, instead of absolutely losing my mind, I decided out of desperation to thumb through the over 4,000 photos and videos on my iPhone and mark my favorites. It was quite a journey, since the pictures went back for many, many years. Hundreds of them were, in some form or another, of my dogs resting. Let’s face it. They’re not industrious animals.

Airborne

It’s good to be done with my short trip and be back on the ground where I belong in my beloved Palo Alto. Hopefully I won’t be anywhere near an airport (as a passenger, at least) for many months to come. It was terribly frustrating to be in the sky during the market day with Wi-Fi that was worse than a 110 baud modem from the early 1980s, but considering how the /YM absolutely REFUSES to make up its mind about which way it wants to go, it seems I didn’t miss much.

The Agony of Slo-Fi

By -

When I first got online back in 1981, about twenty years before everyone ELSE did, it was the age of acoustic couplers, 110/300 baud modems, and screeching connection sounds. I’m reminded of that right now, as I’m aboard a United flight with their horrendous Wi-Fi service, which makes CompuServe look like advanced technology. It’s absolutely agonizing to me, because the connection is so slow as to be virtually useless, plus I’ve already helplessly watched the Dow’s change diminish from negative 300 points to barely down at all.

This is a grueling five hour flight back to the Bay Area, in which I’m going to miss almost the entire trading day. It takes literally 15 minutes just to generate a blank post, so, yeah, you’re on your own, boys and girls. This is all you’re going to get until this evening.

I do have a suggestion for your time, however. EXPLORE THE SITE. I am constantly flabbergasted at how little you folks actually roam around and check out the amazing content and tools here on Slope. On occasion I’ll stumble upon a page which has been down for MONTHS and no one will have even mentioned it to me, I can only suppose because no one ever even went to check it out!

In any case, as I appear to be confined inside what for me is the pitiable torture of being almost totally offline for the trading day, please explore the site and talk amongst yourselves. I’d also beseech my occasional contributors, such as Violet, TNR, LZ, NYUGrad, and Xerxes, to dust off your keyboards and bang out a post, because it would be helpful for me to have content when I land so I can focus on getting Dukie and giving him big squishy hugs.

Until then, I appreciate your patience. God willing, I’m not going to be on a plane until well until 2026. So carve out ten minutes right now and roam Slope, because I didn’t spend the past twenty years building this place just to have a chat forum.
