The Religion of Peace Again

By -

I’m going to make this quick, because I only have a few moments.

I was in the dentist’s chair an hour ago when I heard the news about Paris. This is heartbreaking, of course.

Just two days ago I wrote in roundabout terms about religion in general and Christianity in particular. I received wonderful emails from all over the world about the post.

I find something good about almost every religion. I’m not one of these shitheads who thinks the way to eternal life (whose value I question anyway) is to drop down and worship Jesus. I find merit in Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Mormonism, and just about any other -ism you care to mention.

But I’m here to tell you that I’ve never been able to divine one iota of merit to Islam. To me, it seems like a cult captivated by the notions of bloodshed, revenge, and hatred. I mentioned my adoration of gentleness in my religion post. Where is the gentleness in Islam? Can anyone name a single precept from the religion which has improved life on earth? I’m sorry, but female genital mutilation doesn’t count.

It’s not very Christian of me to be feeling what I’m feeling, but I’m being candid here. Of all the stupid, idiotic things that ever tumbled out of George Bush’s mouth, his immediate description of Islam as “the religion of peace” literally on September 11, 2001 had to be the stupidest of all. No one is saying who is responsible for the mayhem in Paris, and maybe I’ll wind up looking like an asshole when they find out my own Methodist church did the whole thing, but………..I can only thank my lucky stars that I’m in North American, far away from the murderous savages crossing into the borders of Europe.

The irony, of course, is that my own little fortune was made by my company named………..Prophet.
