My little town of Palo Alto has only one daily paper: the Palo Alto Daily Post. It’s free, and it’s a bit of an obsession of mine. I normally can’t stand local papers (I stopped my subscription to the San Jose Mercury News and the SF Chronicle in 1990), but the Post is special (and the free price helps). As you might guess, literally about 60% of the space these days is real estate ads.
Whenever I share any news items with you, I’ve normally torn out a page, scanned it, and uploaded it here. Witness a few tidbits from this weekend’s offering. On page one, we have here more suckitude for Ellen Pao. Not only did she lose her bid to garner countless millions from Kleiner Perkins for her gender bias case, but now they’re coming after her for their own legal bills. This is not what Buddy Fletcher needs, people!
For those of still angling to be my neighbor, another opportunity has come up, and it’s a nice example of the sort of posh living you can get for a very reasonable price. At the end of my street is a run-down little house, clustered amongst several similar properties. It’s decades old, and it’s basically a 1 bedroom/1 bath (they are spinning the family room as another bedroom since, umm, it opens up to the back yard). It’s more than 1,000 square feet, and it can be yours for the low, low price of $2 million (assuming you don’t get outbid).
I was having my own miniature real estate regret. Back in 1991, when I bought my house, my wife and I had our eye on a property in a nicer neighborhood, but it was $100,000 more than we could afford. So we didn’t get it. Although it’s been upgraded since then, I saw an ad for it at about $8.5 million. In other words, the extra $100,000 has translated into an extra $3 million today.
But take heart, dear readers. Because with all the turmoil, uncertainty, and anxiety in the world, we can always distract ourselves with the Kardashian-Jenner freak show and let our troubles melt away. After all, this is the really important news.
