The Skip That Never Leaves You

I grew up during a time of great transition in many technologies, including that of music. I was born into the world of 33 1/3 RPM vinyl and quizzically examined the giant 78 rpm of the past. The 70s brought up cassette tapes, 8-track, and early in the 80s, I was one of the first people in town to get a Compact Disc player with money I made from writing for computer magazines. CDs were the last, best gasp for the music industry. I notice CDs even had pretty cool H&S top to foreshadow their demise!

One curiosity of growing up in that age is something which fewer and fewer people will understand, but some of you will: I listened to our family’s records a lot, and naturally some of them had scratches and would skip. The skip, to me, became an ineradicable part of the song, and to this day, if I’m listening to that same song, I’ll tense up as I approach the “skip” part, even though it’s obviously never going to transpire.
