Some people make a big deal out of New Year Resolutions, and oftentimes, particularly in the United States, these resolutions focus on weight. I don’t bother with resolutions myself, but I wanted to once again tell everyone that going from a “sitting” desk to a “standing” desk a few years ago has made a huge difference for me.
Naturally, 99% of folks out there sit down at a desk, but having decided (out of the blue, really) one day to elevate my desk and sell my Aeron chair, I’d never go back. I don’t have back problems, and I am certain I would be 20 pounds heavier than I am right now if I didn’t stand up all day long.
As I’ve mentioned, if you do this, you absolutely must invest a few bucks in a rubber mat, because if you stand on a hard surface, your feet will be very uncomfortable. Another little innovation I thought up was to orient my keyboard comfortable. Just to show you the kind of inventive genius I am (ha!) I spray-painted a brick and stuck it beneath my keyboard, gluing everything in place. Now my wrists are perfectly horizontal with my arms as I type, which is very comfortable. I am literally resting my hands on the keyboard, and there’s no strain.
Anyway, I’ve got no real reason to promote this “lifestyle”, as it were. I’m not the chair of the Standing Desk Council or anything like that. I simply think it’s a great choice, and I encourage Slopers to consider doing the same.
