It seems that neither of you are ardent supporters of Donald Trump. This open letter is intended to ask you to rethink that position.
Support for Donald Trump has proven to be consistently strong over this election cycle. Even though he seems to make crucial mistakes with his mouth, which has upset many Hispanics and Muslims his popularity only grows. Apparently many people have found a reason to support him, so the question really is why and more importantly why can’t you?
Please note that I personally am not a big Trump fan. I think he is brash and lacks the libertarian bent I would prefer in a candidate. My personal preference with those that currently have a chance to win would be Ted Cruz. Ted is much more conservative and I believe could take us back to a more constitutionally ran government.
But, this letter is not about Ted Cruz it is about Donald Trump.
After studying the man, I believe I could support him if push come to shove. If he is the nominee I would support him and here is why.
Since I have been alive (48 years, although it looks more like 42) no federal politician has solved ANY important issue. Not ONE solitary important issue. How is it that the United States of America has elected hundreds of federal politicians and yet we fail to solve anything. I don’t know that answer but I can tell you that middle class America is pissed off about it.
Let me dive deeper. The big issues facing the USA over the last 50 years are things like our growing debt. If you look state by state and city by city you will see we are gravely in debt. Any research shows that countries fall when they start giving away shit to stay in office (apologies for my words but it is fitting use for what Americans feel).
Our health care cost are getting more and more out of control and any effort to solve that problem has just made it twice as bad.
Also we have an ever-increasing problem with immigration, a tax code that just gets bigger and more unwieldy, and an ever-increasing set of government regulations. As our government gets bigger our middle class gets poorer.
Listed above are our big issues that just go unsolved. To be honest it might be simpler to list to the things that our government has solved in the last 100 years and the only thing that comes to mind is World War 2. We should be proud of what we accomplished in the war. Outside of that I can’t name a single critical item solved by our federal politicians.
I am not trying to pick on Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush and Obama. With each inauguration came new hope. All of the prior Presidents ran on some platform of change bringing exciting hope of taking the ole USA back to her glory days. But, for many reasons which I don’t intend to go through here none were able to succeed on their promises. In fact the promises that get you into office rarely even matter once you are there. We as Americans do not hold our politicians accountable for what we thought they stood for.
I made the determination a month back to my selection of whom to support mathematically. I decided that I would look at each candidate and each issue individually. I gave each candidate points if I thought they would SOLVE each important issue I identified and specifically those issues were; immigration; health care; USA debt; Tax Code; Federal Regulation; and the size of the US government.
Very simply I put each politician down the left side of a piece of paper and the issues I deemed most critical across the top. Then one by one I listed in % terms the chance that each political would solve that problem. It is important to keep in mind that NO politician has solved ANY issue for the last 50 years. So, for me to say there is a 5% chance Bobby Jindal would solve immigration would be an extraordinarily high score (for example). In fact most scores on each topic by each politician was less than 1%. Odds are none of the current candidates are going to solve anything. I am not trying to be draconian. I just have to base my scores on the facts as they presented themselves. No one has solved a problem before them so I can say with a high degree of certainty they won’t either.
and…
That is when it hit me. When I scored my sheet Donald Trump scored the highest. His score showed that he has the highest % chance of solving something.
Is is because he is an outsider, or maybe it is because he does not care what other think, or is it because his ego won’t let him fail? It is really a little of them all I believe. The fact that no politician has solved a single issue crosses party lines. All of the US would like to see a few things solved and looking at both parties he looks to have the highest % chance.
Now, don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying he won’t screw up other things along the way. I think he will screw some things up. But (emphasis here), If he is able to solve a single problem I listed above, he would be doing something no other elected federal political has done in our life time (not including those alive for WW2)
As voters we have to weigh the risk vs the potential reward. His risk of doing something I may not necessarily like is high but in reality every president since I have been alive has only made things worse.. So if Donald messes up a few things he will be in good company. If he solves something he will be in a world of his own!
I could support Donald Trump because he has the highest potential to solve something. What that some this is, I don’t know. Do I think he will solve something? Here is where I think maybe…. He might just get something done and that would be incredible!
And, that is where you both come into play. If he is the candidate for the Republican Party I believe he could use the help of both of you. Not because of your money or your notoriety, but because of your beliefs. Charles Koch is one of the smartest businessmen in the world. Your market based management philosophy is stellar. He needs your help and wisdom. Glenn your historical perspective on our constitution and it applicability in our government going forward is necessary for the US to get on the right track. He will need your help in right the ship going forward.
I doubt I convinced either of you to change your mind. Seriously I know Charles Koch and he does not change his mind easily! But, maybe I made you think a bit and that is enough for me!
Tim here. This is my own contribution to the post:
