My Dad’s the Greatest

Let me start off with this………click on it for a larger, readable version. It’s from 42 years ago.

I originally tried to find something I had done even earlier called My Dad’s the Greatest. See, there was a Baton Rouge department store that had a contest for kids to write and illustrate a little book about their dad. I think I was maybe eight years old or so.

Anyway, I won the contest…….even though my drawings were hilariously bad, since I don’t have an artistic bone in my body…….and my dad was awarded with a new suit from the department store! So, even as a little kid I was able to exchange my writing for goods and services.

Only after I scanned and posted the image above did I realize it had nothing to do with the suit-winning contest, but instead was a later contest in which I won the princely sum of $40 and got my photo in the paper. All I did was take a photo of my dad in the garden and wrote a few words about what he meant to me.

He turns 90 next year. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!
