The Triumph of Cope

Looking at the chart of the Japanese Nikkei 225, it doesn’t exactly look like the picture of health. I decided to dig a bit deeper, however, than merely looking at the price chart.

By using Slope’s Global Economic Charts, I was able to see a pretty fascinating picture of Japan.

It shows a country which is aging, losing its working-age population, ceaselessly mired in staggering debt, and quite evidently populated by folks who have decided against bringing any more children into the world. For such a relatively rich and sophisticated country, it’s eye-opening to see it SHRINKING by millions of people.

It’s no surprise that the propped-up Nikkei is having trouble keep the illusion alive.
