Slope of Hope Blog Posts

Slope initially began as a blog, so this is where most of the website’s content resides. Here we have tens of thousands of posts dating back over a decade. These are listed in reverse chronological order. Click on any category icon below to see posts tagged with that particular subject, or click on a word in the category cloud on the right side of the screen for more specific choices.

Real-Time Movers

We have had Gainers and Losers on the site for quite a well, and we recently added Volume Leaders.

These are available on a dedicated page and also a Data Panel in SlopeCharts itself (pictured just to the right of these words).

The rules applied to allow a symbol onto this list are as follows:

  • previous close > $1.00
  • latest price > $1.00
  • latest volume > 20k
  • issue type = common stock
  • market cap > 200m

Most importantly, now this data is real time (as opposed to the most recent trading day). This is actually a pretty important improvement since, let’s face it, big gainers at this very moment are more interesting than big gainers yesterday!

While we’re in the neighborhood, Let’s take a look at a couple…………

The Biggies

We have made a nice improvement to the Data Panel feature in SlopeCharts.

We have long had the “Big Movers” data panel with the biggest gainers and losers of the current day.

We have now added the Volume Leaders, which shows the top ten highest volume issues for a given day. Some are household names (like AAPL) whereas others, as this example shows, can be surprising newcomers (like CRIS).

As a reminder, click the left and right arrows flanking the name of any data panel to navigate to other panels. You can also control which panels are available by way of the Preferences, which you access by clicking the gear icon in the lower-left portion of SlopeCharts.

Magellan or Drake?

It seems hard to believe, but we’ll be celebrating Slope’s 16th birthday in just a few months. In advance of that, me team and I are focusing on infrastructure improvements. In the midst of doing so, I’m looking to improve the navigation of Slope to make sure as many people know of all the helpful tools and features available to them here. With so much on the site, it’s easy for things to become forgotten.

I made an attempt toward this goal earlier this year, by making some pages specific to kinds of user. There’s a home page for equity traders. There’s a home page for options traders. And, of course, there are the home pages for the different levels of service, like Sloper, Gold, and so forth. But none of these are going to win any international design awards.

Backtesting LIVE!

By -

I am very pleased to announce another exciting addition to the Slope portfolio of analytical tools, and this one is specifically for options traders out there. This one is a doozy, and it’s exclusively for Diamond members: Options Backtesting!

For those of you wanting to treat yourself to a holiday gift of a Diamond membership, I’ve got a surprise for you here – – it is an instant and permanent discount of nearly 40% from the normal price of membership. I very rarely do “sales” like this, but this will get you the Diamond membership for the price of Gold, so jump on it while it’s live!

Performing historical back-tests on options strategies is one of the most computing-intensive and complex tasks in the trading world. Through the Options Backtest Page, the Slope website provides an easy-to-use method to execute what is, behind the scenes, an exceptionally complex task with daily options data going back to 2007.
