Cartesian Bees

One of my simple joys in life is looking at my bee colonies (a joy I share by way of a live Webcam), and I noticed something absolutely fascinating – – about fifty of them formed a neat little arrangement outside their hive, like so:


As shown in the video below, the bees were fanning away, but not to cool the hive. Apparently, for cooling, their heads point up, but when their heads are pointed down like this, they’re releasing a pheromone called the Nasonov pheromone – this is used for guidance and direction. Nature is certainly amazing.
