A Painful Transition

It’s been a long, long 36 hours, so I’ll start with a refreshment.

OK, that’s better.

I’ve got good news and bad news. I’m the sort, and I suspect you are too, that wants to start with the bad news first. Here we go.

The server infrastructure for the Slope of Hope is inadequate for the task. The personnel are not good enough. The downtime is inacceptable. And, after trying for many years to put up with a sub-optimal solution, I have fully given up. I will assume the worst and suggest that the balance of this week could be very rough sailing, Slope-accessibility-wise. This is, in twenty years of running Slope, the worst technical experience of my life. I’ve been in some real high-tech disasters before, but honestly this is one for the books.

Now, J.D. Vance, style, let’s focus on the future.

The good news is that I’ve already set in motion the process to move to a totally different, and VASTLY more expensive, host provider. This involves substantial recurring cost on my part, but once the dust settles, I think that we, collectively, will be VASTLY better off in terms of speed, reliability, and overall site quality.

So, let’s swallow the fact that this week is going to stink and please know that we are moving as swiftly as we can to make the transition. Your data is fully intact, and once I get past this dreadful and horribly sticky situation, I can return my focus to what I enjoy, which is to make NEW things instead of trying to keep OLD things up and running.

I’ve already been bowled over by the patience and understanding of Slopers. Please hang in there, and we’re all going to get to the other side of this thing together. We’ll make the final days with our current service provider as non-horrible as we can.
