Simple. They brazenly purchase their own stock in the open market, in a form of self-dealing which was (quite properly) illegal until 1982.

You are disappointing me, Slope. Truly disappointing me! I’m in my 21st year of doing this, and in spite of all the features crammed onto the site, this is the kind of subscription “growth” I’ve enjoyed this year. How should this make me feel? Don’t go breaking my heart!

I first got online in 1982, and I’ve never looked back. To my dying day, I’ll remember every portion of the sound of a model dialing, handshaking, and connecting with another modem. Yet another part of my misspent youth is about to croak. Farewell, my 1200 baud friend!
