As a child of the cold war, I’m always interested in films that have to do with the nuclear specter. Watching “The Day After” was a seminal event of my youth. The latest is House of Dynamite, on Netflix, which my wife (also a child of the cold war, just vastly better-looking than me) and I watched on Friday night. I highly recommend it, although you will be shaken to the core by being reminded that your life is in the hands of a drunk and a megalomaniac.

The Other Metals
Besides the focus of the prior post (gold), I wanted to mention a couple of metals of interest. I’ve been quite mouthy about my interest in palladium but, not to put too fine a point on it, I want to see this thing battered senseless before I get really serious (like six-figure serious) about it again. I got lucky last week with a quick pop, but honestly, having them hammered down to 116 or so would make my day.

Gold’s Coming Fall
The precious metals sector is up hundreds of percent over the past few years. The miners have had an explosive rally to lifetime highs, but I think they’ve topped out for weeks, if not months. I think the dashed blue line (below present price levels) is a decent minimal target for prices to sink.

Volatility Analogy
In recent weeks, the VIX blasted from 18 to almost 30 back to 18 again. I was curious if there were any other occurrences in which this took place. I found a very similar set of behavior that ended, of all days, last Christmas Eve.
