There are many reasons for this, including a gazillion international applicants and the ease of applying to multiple schools these days. Above all, however, is the simple economic fact that a smaller and smaller number of people are going to get larger and larger slices of the pie, such as this plum INTERNSHIP at Jane Street whose base salary (not including the bonus) is a quarter million dollars for some brainy kid.
