As valuable as it is to recognize patterns, it is just as valuable to recognize when price action exits a permissible zone. Sometimes this can be in the form of prices just “exiting stage left” from a formation, and other times the pattern will be complete and behaving itself and then suddenly do a 180-degree turn. Here are three examples of topping patterns that DID look good but defied expectations (and should have been aborted when the violation took place).

This Will NOT End Well

I find this graph incredible. In the early 1970s, when the US economy seemed so troubled (the “rust belt”, inflation, etc.) our debt-to-GDP was only about 20%. Very, very healthy! Now we’re into the triple digits, and there is NO going back. The government is so grotesquely gargantuan, the welfare state so entrenched, and the commitment of the government to NEVER let the stock market go down EVER, that we’re just headed for absolute and irreversible ruin.
