My boy is doing so well financially, I decided it was time he establish a relationship at the private banking level. After all, there’s only so much I can do to advise him, and I’d like to get some professional financial guidance into his life. We thus had a meeting with the Chase team, got all squared away, and were handed some welcoming literature when we left.

Given the target market for Chase/JP Morgan Private Banking, you’d think these little booklets would have images for garrulous gentlemen sipping scotch, smoking cigars, and having a grand old rich man’s time.

Another Inflection Point

In my last couple of posts I was writing about the rally scenarios on SPX and was saying that the recent lower high on SPX increased the chance that the retracement from that high was to finish forming a bull flag that would then break up into a minimum target at a retest of the rally high. The close last Friday back over the daily middle band was a pointer that SPX might be breaking back up, and that has followed through into a retest of the rally high, so that bull flag has broken up and played out. So where does that leave SPX now?

Well the first thing to say here is that the economic situation is not improving. The chart below is the Atlanta fed GDP forecast for Q2 2020 and at the moment that is looking like an expected Q2 2020 GDP in the -32% area. That is dire and it would be tempting to say that it is just deranged to think that stocks can head much higher in this environment. That said though, making money on stocks using economic fundamentals analysis has always been a chancy business and, while new all time highs directly from here look very ambitious, we could well see SPX go a bit higher before economic gravity drags SPX down to the lower lows that history strongly suggests will be coming in the next few months.

Our Gang of Unfortunates

When I was a little kid, one of the staples of children’s television was The Little Rascals, which was the Our Gang series of shorts from the Great Depression that had been syndicated for decades. I watched these little films countless times, such as this one:

Even though these kids were my age way back when my parents were little kids themselves, I felt a close kinship to them. They became my television friends. (more…)

Hello, Larry

They say not to judge a book by its cover. I’m sure my mother must have told me this as a child. And yet I’ve ignored this advice all my life. I instantly judge people, sometimes based on just a glance. And I’m equipped with all the “-dars” out there – – gaydar……..jewdar…….and so on. And the amazing thing, my “-dars” have proved themselves utterly infallible. 100% track record. It’s uncanny.

So, shame on me, Mr. Judge-not-lest-you-be-judged failure, for ignoring my kindly mother’s advice. And I offer yet another judgment of someone I’ve never met, I don’t know, and I know very little about. Larry Kudlow. At a glance, I concluded this guy was a complete and utter dork.
