The Dusty Goggles

By -

I’ve been meaning to write about this topic, and seeing this chart today reminded me to do so:

You may recall back in early February, I did a post stating, in glowing terms, how fun the Metaquest 3 goggles were. I wasn’t kidding: they really were a kick, and for a few weeks there, I was playing with them every day (usually a game called Synth Rider).

A few days ago, my wife asked me why I hadn’t played with the goggles in a while, and it occurred to me that I had forgotten about the things altogether! I hadn’t made any deliberate decision to do so. It’s not like I decided, OK, enough is enough, I don’t want to use these things anymore. I just……….stopped.

I’ve got a hunch this is what has happened with a lot of folks who got these things, although it certainly hasn’t impacted META’s ungodly 400% price gains they’ve enjoyed over the past couple of years.

From my point of view, if Meta has trouble keeping the attention of those paying $500 for their goggles, God help Apple, which charges almost $4,000 for a similar experience. I’d rather that almost every single Vision Pro purchased is sitting on shelf somewhere, collecting lots of expensive dust.
