I had an interesting little experience the other day which reminded me of a post I wrote a decade ago.
Here in my beloved home of Palo Alto, weâve got a shopping center that has been around for decades called Town & Country. I had to run an errand down there, so I had to make a quick decision whether to take the Tesla or just pile all my dogs into my other (not-as-nice) car. The dogs were eager for a drive, so I decided to slum it and take the non-Tesla instead.

Iâd like to start off by making clear just how rich my neighbor Mark Zuckerberg is. Letâs say his wealth was frozen at its current level right now. And letâs further say the manâs fetish is to have $1,000,000 in cash piled up in front of him, doused in gasoline, and set ablaze. And, just when it’s almost entirely burned to a crisp, his puts out the fire by peeing on it (Hey, everyoneâs got their kink). So, letâs just say thatâs what heâs really into.

A few years ago, I was chatting with an acquaintance of mine who happens to be pretty rich. I donât know the exact figure, but his net worth was probably something like $80 million. He was definitely in âultra-high net worthâ territory and quite obviously never needed to work another day in his life.
He was bemoaning the fact that if he hadnât sold his energy company so early, he would be âa billionaire by now.â My heart didnât exactly ache for the guy, but his complaint (which these days I think is referred to as a âhumblebragâ) made an impression.
