Barry Lyndon

It’s a strange day today. Since the wee hours of this morning, Slope has been, from my perspective, offline. But this isn’t really the case. There’s a big-ass (I’m using technical terms here) problem with chunks of the Internet, partly thanks to the world’s most-hated company, Comcast. If you’re interested, you can see the commotion right here.

As with yesterday, I’ve been shorting left, right, and sideways, in spite of the market being annoying almost beyond words. Indeed, in my options account, I’ve done something I’ve never done before, which is put every single penny into positions (I’m often very conservatively positioned, with the majority of the account in cash). You can call me The King of Puts. (Alternately, King Putz).

In the midst of all this, I’ve been watching (or, more accurately, listening to and occasionally glancing at) a movie I’ve avoided for years: Barry Lyndon. Although I’m a huge Stanley Kubrick fan, dating back to my teenage years, I’ve often heard that Barry Lyndon was dull, slow, plodding, and not worth watching.

Those naysayers couldn’t be more wrong. The film is gorgeous, enchanting, mesmerizing, superbly well-acted, and engaging. I know this is something I’m going to watch over and over again. Thus, in the midst of this weird day, I wanted to offer my recommendation to any fellow souls out there who haven’t bothered watching it. In the meantime – – I’m just going to keep patiently waiting for the Internet Gods to get their act together. (Indeed, the only reason I’m able to even be on Slope myself is because I’ve got a workaround…………using my iPhone, tethered to my laptop, for access!)
